About Penny Cheng
Penny Cheng, is the Owner and Designer of Saniki Creations. The name, Saniki, is a combination of the names of her daughters: Kiara, Anisa, and Saige. She currently resides in New Westminster, BC, Canada in a small community known as Queensborough with her husband, children, and dog.
Penny immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1974 at the age of three from Hong Kong with her parents and brother. After graduating high school, she went on to be employed as an Office Manager/Accounting Clerk for private and public practices. She also has a background in marketing and retail management/sales. An urge for creativity not found at the office, Penny switched careers and became a Preschool Teacher and School-Age Daycare Assistant. Still not feeling her creative side fulfilled, wanting to stay at home with her daughters, and constantly fixing the poorly made jewelry they would purchase from the mall stores, Penny discovered the joy of Jewelry Designing.
Penny has been designing and creating jewelry since 2008. With no formal training, she considers herself as a Self-Taught Artist and is consistently teaching herself new techniques to refine her art. Penny's first designs were recycled or broken jewelry that she reworked by adding her own twist to represent her own style with an array of glass beads, crystals and semiprecious stones. She then evolved to designing pieces that she "envisioned in her mind". In January 2009 Penny created her company, Saniki Creations as an outlet for her to sell her designs and to show the world her new found creative side. Her fondness for all things metal led the way for her to discover the ancient technique called Chainmaille, which she now specializes in.
Family and work are her priorities, however Penny is also an active member in various groups. Penny is a devoted child and animal welfare advocate, enjoys volunteering for her community and to some of her close friends, "just a wacky, lovable gal who would do anything for her friends".
Self Representing Artist Jewelry Designer (SRAJD), Member since 2009.
The SRAJD designation is reserved for artisans/designers worldwide who create and sell their own work. A self representing artist does not sell mass produced beads or jewelry. When you buy from an SRAJD, you are supporting the Artist directly, not the middle man.
